Yes, another new puzzle - fubuki...

Found this one in a French puzzle magazine and it's quite quick and good fun:

it's a 3 x 3 square puzzle where you are given the sums for each row and column. Using these you can place the numbers from one through nine on the grid, each number is used just once, and there's only solution.

That's the idea, here's the puzzle in practice:

Hooray! I am a Fubiki master!!!! I definitely see shades of killer sudoku in those puzzles. Having done so much sudoku, killer sudoku and kakuro I didn't find these too difficult at all! I wouldn't want to give the game away to anyone who hasn't tried this yet, so feel free to delete this post if you wish, but I am sure you will know what I mean when I say the combinations of 23 and 7 in all of the puzzles is key!

Great variety of puzzles you keep coming up with.

Well done, Christine!

As soon as I looked at the sample I thought "combinations -Kakuro" and my brain shut down, as it always does when I look at a Kakuro! But, being another new puzzle, I will have to have a go at them one day. Thanks, Dan!

Go on Marilyn give them a try, you never know you might like them

The easy and the first half of the medium ones can be solved just by considering the valid 'pencilmarks' for each solution square, you don't need to do any "if this then this" type thinking that you do with most kakuro.

I shall have to put up some harder puzzles for Christine where you can't immediately place any numbers purely through considering valid initial combinations; currently even the hard ones let you place a couple that way!

Would be interesting to know if you find this one slightly trickier than the other ones Christine!

(It's only a little bit harder because after all these are only 3x3 puzzles so are inevitably much quicker than say a killer sudoku due to their mini-nature)

Marilyn, don't switch off, I'm sure you won't find these too difficult at all you being a sudoku expert! Don't think kakuro - think killer sudoku cage combinations and you'll be well away!

Thanks for the extra puzzle Dan! It wasn't too bad at all, but yes it was a little more difficult than the others! Like you say they are only 3 x 3 puzzles but make a nice change when you want something that you are not going to have to rack your brain over for days and still get nowhere!

Running out of ideas for puzzles now... still, there must be between 30 and 40 different ones here which is as comprehensive as anywhere

There are other obscure Japanese puzzles out there like Masyu and so on, but making interactive players for those would be a bit of a nightmare!

The 'craze' at the moment in the UK at least seems to be for 'mind gym' type puzzles which is basically doing a bit of maths and a few short self-contained word puzzles doesn't it?

Funny how times and trends in puzzles change every year!

Have to agree with you, Dan - there are plenty of puzzles here to keep people busy! I doubt there'd be any moaning about the lack of new ones for a long, long time!

I'm getting quite fond of the "mind gym" type puzzles. I was pleased to see a section of these in the Sudoku Pro magazine. There's also a new monthly magazine called BrainTrainer which, if you haven't seen this yet, is also a mix of logic/maths/word/visual puzzles. It's quite a fun magazine, with a daily work-out section, special activities and a "Mind Doctor" who gives tips for improvement on different aspects each issue. But it does need a few Easter Eggs and a spine puzzle!!! Sigh - I still miss MindGames.
